My room mate left the oven on for 11 hours straight. How much will this affect our electric bill?

by admin on April 7, 2010

We have an electric oven. My room mate is an idiot. Will this drastically affect our bill? Should I make him pay extra?
The oven was on 345
We actually haven’t gotten our first bill yet, although that is good advice. We just moved in.

depends on how high the temp was on the oven. It wont make alot of difference if he only did it once.

A lot, I’d say! Examine the electric bill in detail and see if it has the details on it and make him pay!

if say last month was 100.00 and this month its 150.00 i would make him pay the 50.00.

Depends on the time of day, climate and what you did during the time it was on.

It won’t be that much if he left it on at night if you live in a northern climate. The heat was keeping the house warm and probably prevented the use of the propane or gas heater in the house, which is a little bit of an offset. Also is good to dry the house and prevent mold and mildew, guess how much that’s gonna cost you?

If you also did some cooking instead of complaining the whole time, you’ve also might have saved some money. Good thing to do is roast some potatoes, nuts, veggies etc. Also good to boil up some fruits for a punch or steam up a pot of rice or tea while the oven’s on anyway.

Don’t make soup however, cuz it doesn’t last that long and is usually better fresh.

Do not bitch at him, instead get him a heat pillow, heater, coffee mug etc. This way it will be easier to ask for favors next time you’re late on rent. It will happen, trust me.
