Question by Ed: How to look after a Sarasa Comet goldfish?
I have a sarasa comet goldfish in a tank. I know goldfish are pretty easy to look after but I want it to thrive to its full potential. Any tips on how to look after them would be great. Thanks.

To provide the best environment for your goldfish and to help it thrive and be healthy, here are my recommendations:
1. Make sure you have enough space for it to grow. Comets grow to be very big, they are actually more suitable to be pond fish than aquarium fish. This is not to say you cannot keep it in a tank, just that you should provide ample space for it. For ever comet you have, I would recommend no less than 20 gallons of water for each. You can always provide more space than 20 gallons each, but I wouldn’t recommend any less.
2. Filtration is a very big must with all goldfish types. Goldfish produce a lot of waste. Proper filtration will help clear up floating debris, aerate the tank, and provide a place where beneficial nitrifying bacteria can grow (for more information look into the Nitrogen cycle.) What is usually recommended on www.kokosgoldfish.com is to have a combined filtration of 10x your tank size. So if your tank is 20 gallons, you want at least 20×10= 200gph filtration on the tank. Again, you can go more, but any less is not recommended.
3. Provide a variation of quality foods in their diet. I like to feed my goldfish high protein foods like hikari brand pellets, pro-gold, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and beef heart. I also feed them vegetables on occasion like blanched broccoli, peas, spinich, in addition to spirulina flakes.
4. This one is highly debatable, but I prefer to keep my goldfish in a bare bottom tank because a) it provides more water volume for the fish, b) there are less places for waste, and other nasties to build up, and c) it’s a lot easier for the goldfish to get to their food and for me to clean.
I would highly recommend joining a goldfish forum. I personally am a part of www.kokosgoldfish.com. There are many experienced fishkeepers who are more than willing to share their tips, advice, and experiences.
